Abstract

RISTY ANI. Reporting of Drug Abuse and The Image of Yogyakarta City as The City of Education (Qualitative Descriptive Studies of Students Perception, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta toward Kedaulatan Rakyat and Harian Jogja Newspaper). Thesis. Yogyakarta: Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. 2012. This study aims to describe student’s perception of UIN Sunan Kalijaga toward the reporting of drug abuse that was published on Kedaulatan Rakyat and Harian Jogja newspaper then find out student’s perceptions toward the image of Yogyakarta City as the City of Education after reading the news about drug abuse in both newspapers. The results of this study is to enrich knowledge in the scope of the Public Relations particularly in image. This study is qualitative descriptive research. The data were collected using focus group discussions methods, documentation, and observation. Data analysis using qualitative descriptive method which is an analysis described through words or phrases separated by category to get a conclusion. To check the validity of the data, the author uses triangulation. The results of this study indicate: 1) Students perceive a story based on the information / messages that have been captured. Factors that determine student’s perceptions of the news are attention and memory or experience. According to students, drug abuse reporting as published in Kedaulatan Rakyat dan Harian Jogja newspaper too highlight the students as the drug abusers so that can make a bad image of Yogyakarta students. Reporting about drug abuse is considered to worsen Yogyakarta City's image as the city of education but not damage the image of Yogyakarta City as the city of education. This is in line with the theory of mass media effects dependency that mass media gives the cognitive and affective impact. 2) According to the students, although the reporting about drug abuse is considered to worsen Yogyakarta City's image as a city of education, but students still positively asses Yogyakarta City as the City of Education. According to them there are many other factors that more capable to damage the image of the Yogyakarta City such as college students free sex phenomenon and “ayam kampus”. It is related to the Expectancy-Value Theory that is information about drug abuse can increase student perception about the number of students who are involved in drug abuse in Yogyakarta area, but does not change the student's attitude (perception tendency) Yogyakarta City’s image as the city of Education.
