Abstract

This is a dissertation analyzing a discourse about the matan validity of a hadist (prophet's guidance). Nowadays, many hadists are questioned on their authenticity, even though they are included in books of standard hadists. There develops an argument that researches already done by hadist collectors such as al-Bukhari and Muslim do not put much concern on the principle of matan validity of a hadist but only focus on sanad validity of a hadist. This has encourages some Islamic prominent figures to reformulate the principle of matan validity of a hadist. There are at least two formulations of principle of matan validity of a hadist considered to be different and dichotomous according to muhaddithun and fuqaha. Based on this difference, some academic matters analyzed here are as follows: how is the thought development of the principle of matan validity of a hadist?; how is the formulation of the principle of matan validity of a hadist according to muhaddithun and fuqaha?; what kind of basic difference that causes the different formulation?; and, is it possible to find a point of agreement from the formulation of the principle of matan validity of a hadist? Those questions are analyzed qualitatively using a comparative method. With the method employed, a description is drawn that dichotomy of muhaddithun and fuqaha should not happen due to the explanation by fuqaha that what they have done is actually the follow-up work of what was done by hadist collectors, categorized with muhaddithun. Aside from that, the principles of matan validity of a hadist they convey are in accordance with what is conveyed by muhaddithun. The difference occurs basically based on the different perspective seen by both groups toward hadists' position from al-Quran. For fuqaha, hadists are not more than just al-Quran "bayan". Hadists must not give additional information that is not found in al-Quran (ziyadat 'ala al-nass). Meanwhile, for muhaddithun, hadist can take a function as an independent rule despite their absence in al-Quran. Besides, according to muhaddithun, as long as the hadists have valid sources, information brought within them should be applied in Moslems' daily life. If the hadists seem to be against the al-Quran, a theory of ikhtilaf al-hadith needs to be taken into account. Because there is no a dichotomy in the formulation of the principle of matan validity of a hadist by muhaddithun and fuqaha, an agreement to unite the difference may be made. The point of agreement between two groups is a line with what is mentioned as theory of major and minor principles as applied by M. Syuhudi Ismail on sanad hadist. Major principles of matan validity are to avoid shudhudh and 'illah while the others conveyed by either muhaddithun or fuqaha are minor principles from two major principles. To differentiate them, principles free from shudhudh are investigated through a muqaranah method, that is, comparing various different histories of a hadist while principles free from 'illah are investigated through a mu'aradah, that is, comparing information conveyed in a hadist with information obtained from other theorems such as al-Quran, hadists, history, or logics.
