Abstract

Mass media as one of social institution has a significant role in the process of building the character and morality of a nation, including Indonesia. Muhammadiyah, one of the social - civic organizations in Indonesia also uses newspaper as a medium of preaching. It aims at developing Islam. In general, it can be understood that the use of the mass media in conveying any idea of organization was excellent in the 1912-1926 year. It happened because the year was considered as a moving era, as popularized by Takashi Shiraishi. Suara Muhammadiyah plays two significant roles i.e as the direct Islamic education and as a social control in society. The Social control carried out is a form of counter-culture to initiate the swift currents of Christian mission in Java Island. By applying the Islamic Centered paradigm, this study attempts to explain the role of Suara Muhammadiyah as the media which has an important role in informal education through several factors. The historical data in the past can be understood by using historical consciousness which develop an objective - critical attitude and dismiss romantic patterns and the history of antiquranisme.
