Abstract

This research aims to find, to compare, and to understand a social dialect produced by Tess as the educated people to her mother, to Alec and Angel D‘Urberville. In this analysis, the researcher explores how Tess uses her utterance to her mother and to Alec and Angel D‘Urberville with a different dialect as well as the factors influencing the dialect. This research uses descriptive qualitative as the research metodhology. The data is also analyzed by describing and finding the standard and non-standard English based on Tess‘ utterance through grammar and vocabulary as different dialects. The researcher explains the social dialect based on Holmes‘ theory and standard and non-standard English based on Milroy‘s theory. The researcher draws the following conclusions of the research. First, Tess‘ utters non-standard English to her mother in a low class situation. Second, she utters standard English to Alec and Angel D‘Urberville in a high class community. However, Tess also ever utters non-standard English to Alec D‘Urberville as the high class people because she has some reasons caused by her social character. Third, the reason of Tess‘ uttering different social dialects is explained into some categories. They are social class, social status, social network and social context. In more details, Tess utters 6 non-standard English and 65 standard English of grammar and vocabulary. In addition, she utters 12 nonstandard English vocabulary within all the 83 conversations to her mother and to Alec and Angel D‘Urberville.
