Abstract

This research intends to explain the verbal and nonverbal communication on the visually impaired students of Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University in Yogyakarta via Facebook. Communication on Facebook is part of Computer Mediated Communications (CMC). Verbal and nonverbal interaction in CMC using cues provided by computer applications. Facebook has been familiar among the visually impaired person because it has features that are easy to operate by them. On Facebook there are also a variety of groups and fanspage associated with the organization or the blind community. Facebook provides many benefits for them in expanding friendship, enrich knowledge and information, share ideas and build relationships. This research type was descriptive qualitative. The data collection methods derived from primary data sources and secondary data sources through interviews, observation, and documentation. The technique to measuring the validity of the data using triangulation of source. Then the data were analyzed using the model of Miles and Hubberman, which consist of data reduction, data presentation, withdrawal and conclusion testing. The results showed verbal communication includes adherence to the norms of the language by using the standard language and not abbreviated, interpersonal conversation and narrative conversation, writing short sentences and concise, utilizing the current vocabulary to communicate, using active participation languages, so that others can be involved in the talks as well as responding to dissent, using irony appropriatelly when provoked by the comments or interlocutors criticism. The type of nonverbal communication are including the use of paralinguistic cues by putting emoticons, images, selecting vocabulary, rhythm and sentence pressure, consider the communication time (chronemics), communication frequency on Facebook, writing long messages, how fast the response in providing answer to the interlocutor, giving an appropriate feedback of the topic discussed, and correcting the grammar before sending the message.
