Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the dynamics of nyai leadership on pesantren Javanese culture, influencing factorsand model of nyai leadership on pesantren Javanese culture. The subjects were nyai who lead pesantren based on modern and salaf are in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. The method of this research is a descriptive qualitative case study. Observation, interview and field collecting are used to collect the data. Qualitative data analysis in interactive Miles and Hubermann model is used to analyze. The result shows that every nyai have different dynamic of leaderships which based on their boarding school’s background they’ve been managing. Nyai also has different leadership style to each other. This research find that modern boarding school which has managerial leadership style and democratic view are more applicable effectively. At the other hand, charismatic leadership style and authoritarian are more effective to be applied in salaf boarding school which make tasawuf as their background. There are many factors that may influence the leadership of a nyai in Java, such as motivations, ideology, family (aristocratic), the follower or Jamaah, santri, based on kinship culture andpatronase culture. In salaf pesantren nyai leadership also influenced by aristocracy culture and patrinomial culture. Nonetheless, in modern pesantren, leadership of a nyai can inspires other women and pesantren. At the other side, the leadership of a nyai also bring several impact for boarding school which has salaf background such as the jamaah may split into pro and cons, and also about the management of the mosque which already held by the community and jamaah which caused by the patriachal culture whose still have power
