Abstract

This article aims to explain about mental health and mental illness of Islamic literatures mainly elaborated from the Qur’an and concepts tazkiyatunnafs, the ideas and experience of the Sufi scholars. Studies is done by examining multiple sources that contain ideas about mental health in Islam either explicitly or implicitly, then combined to obtain a proper concept. The results showed that mental health in Islam does not include the concepts of mental health based on psychology version, but also the matters of faith, worship and morality. Thus Islam mental health includes both mental health and spiritual health as well. Either mental health or unhealthy mental in Islam is rooted in the most basic problem in the Islamic faith related to either monotheism or polytheism. Tawhid is considered a source of mental health, otherwise shirk is a source of mental morbidity. Various mental illnesses such as love of the world, angry, ujub and arrogant, rooted in spiritual territory in the form of shirk then penetrated into the territory of the soul in the form of hypocritical and entities in the real territory in the form of fasik. Any various mental health like pleasure, sincerity, asceticism, patience and gratitude, come down from the spirit of monotheism which raises the purity of soul or moral attitude or tazkiyatunnafs which create noble behavior.
