Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the factors of selecting fiction at the Tunas Aulia library of Masjid Syuhada Elementary School. Describe in this paper on selecting fiction that have been done by librarian, the things are considered in choosing fiction by librarian. As for method used wa qualitative research. To obtain valid data, researcher used several data collections techniques are observation, interview, and documentation. Data analyzed using three stages, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Research result obtained that selecting fiction need consider seven aspects assessment children’s literature, plot, setting, characterization, theme, style, illustration, and the mode of delivery, beside that author and publisher are included. Plot that used in children’s fiction is forward plot because children not understanding flash-back. Theme in children’s fiction must have moral to them. Choosing simple setting to children’s fiction will help them to get purpose story easily. Choosing simple characterization in children’s fiction is needed, because children will follow their favorite character in story. Simple style, choose words exactly, and avoid dirty words in children’s literature will help them to understand the story, and avoid them to use dirty words. Illustration in children’s fiction is important because it will represent the story and to motivate children to read. Beside that, mode delivery books like font, font size, paper, pages, cover, and book binding are considered in choosing fiction. Althought, font size still considered in choosing children’s fiction, but font size is not influence children’s motivation to read a book. Author has choosed is has many works and publisher has choosed is Islamic publisher. Based on this research, writer give suggests, first, choosing setting in children’s fiction should not be confined. It will be evolving children’s imagination. Second, policy about selecting fiction is needed. Third, cooperation among teacher, librarian, headmaster, or parents of children is needed in selecting fiction.
