Abstract

This research aims to determine the factor causing damage of ancient manuscripts and the overhelming’s methods. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The researcher used observation, interviews, and documentations as the data collection methods. The instrument of research was interview manual compiled based on problem on research object. Data analysis used data reduction, data prsentation, and than was drawn conclusion. Validity test of this research used triangulation. Result of this research shows that the factors causing damage of ancient manuscripts by several of the factors that cause damage to ancient manuscripts at the State Museum Sonobudoyo Yogyakarta is the factor of the ink used to write the script contains elements of vero or iron, accumulation of library materials is too much (physical force), crime (theft and vandalism) and disosiasi (carelessness officer) as well as leaks and high humidity. Countermeasures is made by fumigation, deadifikasi, giving thymol, maintain the cleanliness of the room and a manuscript, set at room temperature and light intensity, patching material library, and provides guidance to visitors. The barriers faced to conduct treatment towards the damage of anchient manuscript at the State Museum Sonobudoyo Yogyakarta is the lack of human resources to handle the preservation and conservation of ancient manuscripts, other than that the preservation and conservation laboratory space that is less utilized to the maximum.
