Abstract

Some publishers and single-title journals were selected from Beall’s list and online search results, and then analyzed according to some criteria to find out the falseness in the journal publishing. Fake journals exploit the open access journal publishing model in various modes, with the motive mainly to gain revenue from authors without involving scholarship.Various forms of the falseness are: journals’ name usually contain global nature, international or world, labelled with America or Europe; journals claim exaggerated impact factor; publishers take over the authors copyright; publishers charge authors after the article is accepted without clear statement before submission; journals publish articles that have been published in other journals; no specific coverage in multidisciplinary journal; journals engage in practice of plagiarism; and very quick frequency of journals issue. In the perspective of scholarly communication as an established academic tradition, the existence of the falseness is a corruption of journal function as a mean of sholarly communication, and has implications to the emergence of counterfeit knowledge, goods and products that are harmful to human life.
