Abstract
Green chemistry is the application of the principle of the removal and reduction of hazardous compounds in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products. The goal of this research was to synthesize and characterize the nitration reaction product with basic material alternatives, i.e., salicylic acid and vanillin which emphasizes the principles of green chemistry. Phenol was usually used as basic material in the organic chemistry practicum as the application nitration reaction on benzene. The synthesis of compounds was carried out through electrophilic aromatic substituting reaction to reactants, i.e., salicylic acid and vanillin, with each reactant reacted with calcium nitrate and acetic acid. The characterization of the products was observed by IR spectrophotometer. The nitration reaction products with salicylic acid and vanillin as the basic material has obtained 6.28% and 55.72 % of yield.
