Abstract

Pandanarang figure has become a legendary figure in Central Java and Yogyakarta. Oral stories regarding this figure has been existing and staying alive in the community. The story of this figure also exists in the tradition of writing, one of which is written in the Babad Demak script of literate and Javanese speaking. Babad Demak contains not only history, legends and myths but also the life journey of a character. One of the figures that want to be presented in this research is Pandanarang figure, regent of Semarang at that time. The researcher not only presents the character's journey of life with the philology method of editing and translation but also analyzing it with narrative structure analysis. It aims to help the reader's understanding of Pandanarang character story of life becomes easier. The results show that a story in Babad Demak brings a message from the author of the story to the reader. There is communication between writers and readers. The structure of the story of Pandanarang in embracing Islam in Babad Demak pupuh XXXVII-XXXIX formed is as follows; hubbuddunyā, hubbul ākhirah, riyādhah, tazkiyyatun nufūs and iqtida’ bil muallim.. The structure of the story of the journey of Pandanarang in embracing Islam from previously hunting down the world's treasures becomes oriented to the akherat (heaven) and living life like his teacher (Sunan Kalijaga). The findings of the story of Pandanarang in Babad Demak is very useful for the repertoire of Islamic culture in Java in particular and in Indonesian archipelago in general.
