Abstract

This research is basically based on the concerns about the lack of progressive study of the hadith, especially the study of understanding hadith. Most of the works of understanding hadith are concerned only in the literal meaning, the explanation of the word, the excavation of the Islamic law (fiqh) without any other progressive approach. Many hadiths that should be discussed in deep manner and have great scientific contributions are only understood commonly. Therefore, there should be efforts to develop the study of understanding hadith with other progressive approach. One approach that may be developed is linguistic approach, especially semiotics. Actually, Islamic universities have been long enough to discuss this approach, which is generally studied with hermeneutics. In this context, text reviewers prefer to bring semiotics to the study of the Qur'an than hadith. The study of “hadith semiotics”seems be lack of sufficient attention academically. This phenomenon is a problem and should be solved, because there are also many interesting signs in the hadith to be seen with semiotic approach. In response to all above, this research is directed as a solution to one of the problems that befall this discourse of hadith by using Roland Barthes’s semiotics, one of the French semiotic experts, to understand the hadith of Prophet. This semiotics is appropriate for discussing symbolic hadiths. Two words closely related to the symbol are iblis and malaikah. Therefore, this study focuses on hadiths containing these two words which are often disputed. Therefore, this research is going to answer three problems at once. First, how is the methodology of understanding of hadiths based on Roland Barthes’s semiotics?Second, how is the application of the methodology of understanding those hadiths?Third, what are the implications of using that methodology of hadith in the study of hadith? This research concluded at least two things. First, by using with Roland Barthes's semiotics theory in particular the theory of denotation and connotation described earlier, the researcher succeeded in constructing a methodology of understanding the hadith by Roland Barthes's semiotics based on some adjustments, especially regarding the gap of time between researchers and Prophet, namelyfourteen centuries ago. Second, on the result of applying the Roland Barthes's semiotics theory to the hadith which mentions Iblis and Malaikah, it is found that the efforts of the Prophet is to reinforce the differences between both and to change the connotations that lead to the ideology of pre-Islamic Arabic animism to Islamic monotheism.
