Abstract

Previous research reports indicate that film can change one’s opinion and also has the ability to increase students’ learning interest. Thus, film as one of the mass media has the potential as a propaganda agent and to educate people by displaying a mirror image of our society. But the image of female role in films that are shown in numerous film genre, including science fiction, tends to be physically objectified and represented through stereotypical character traits such as a cold-hearted person or a damsel in distress. This research aims to explain how feminism is represented in a science fiction film. Roland Barthes’ model of semiotic analysis is used as an analytical blade to dissect feminism signs that are present in the film. The film that was studied in this research is Arrival, a science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and released in 2016. The data are collected from the digital record of Arrival film and divided into the cinematic and narrative element of the film. The obtained signs, then explained using Barthes’ second order signification by analyzing the denotative level and then the connotative level of each sign. The result of this research indicates that there are four main scenes in Arrival that are able to represent feminism. Those scenes contain the key elements of feminism, namely, equality, difference, care, choice, time, and experience. Arrival can show a positive and aspiring representation of woman and feminism that breaking the poorly stereotype female character and become a definitive example of woman’s portrayal in the media.
