Abstract

Interpersonal communication is communication frequently done by people. This communication is also an important tool in maintaining good relations among people. Interpersonal communication sometimes gives uncertainty towards a person. This is due to the lack of knowledge towards something new or things which has never been met before. Uncertainty also occurs in Islamic boarding schools and happens to new students. The research entitled "The Management of Uncertainty in Santris’ Interpersonal Communication", has a formulation of the problem on How to Manage Uncertainty in New Students’ Interpersonal Communication at Islamic Boarding School of Ali Maksum in Yogyakarta. The purpose of this research is to find out the strategies carried out by Santri to eliminate or reduce the uncertainty. This study used methodology of a qualitative descriptive research. The data sources used by researchers were primary and secondary data, as the researcher obtained the data through interviews and documentation. The interviews were conducted with new students and the Islamic boarding school administrators. This was done to determine uncertainty and the strategies to reduce it. The theoretical basis used in the research is the theory of uncertainty, prediction theory, explanation, and also the theory of integration-interconnection with Ushul Fiqh. Based on the data analysis, it was found that uncertainty occurred because of the lack of knowledge by the new students towards the boarding school environment. By using the principle of uncertainty theory namely explanation and management strategy, Santri can reduce or even eliminate the uncertainty within themselves. This was done using different strategies according to the habits of each student.
