Abstract

The unfavourable problems encountered by Madrasah (Islamic Elementary School) Sultan Agung,namely lack of attentionfrom parents to their children;insufficient parents’ assistance to the children’s learning;absence of parents’ motivation and support to children; low students’ spirit of learning; and not enough parent-child time, lower the students’ achievement. Plenty of its students come from busy-working families that send their children to school and let the school teachers take their responsibilty over.Concerning these existing situations, the writer conducted a study on the role of parents in students’ achievement, the role of students’ self-regulating, and other nuisance and its solutions. The study is aimed to cope with these issues and to have a better understanding on the matter. The study employed qualitative approach with observation, interview, and open document and questionnaire as instruments to collect data. The students’ parents, teachers, the principle, administration staffs, not to mention other relevant documents, were the sources of data. The results shows that parents played many different roles: child assistants, favourable-learning creators, child facilitators and motivators, financial sources, child lunch delivery persons, and school subject references. Success in studies, to such an extent, depends on the pupils’ spirit, motivation and willingness. To reach the highest possible results, a harmonious collaboration among parents, teachers and pupils’ spirit is a necessity as hand-in-hand work is likely to ease problem solving.
