Abstract

Satan Slave (Pengabdi setan) is one of the most popular horror films in Indonesia in 2017, story of a family that gets various strange events due to the effects of one family member being a satan servant. This research title is "Religious symbols in the Satan slave film". Researcher wants to know how religious symbols are shown in a modern horror film, this study aims to discover the religious symbols used in this film. The methodology in this research is descriptive method, with a qualitative descriptive approachment. Data analysis uses visual material to analyze objects. Data collection through video media from this film. This study uses the semiotic theory from Roland Barthes based on the significance of two stages, namely denotation and connotation. Religious symbols include conversations that contain Islamic religious terms, religious rituals, religious activities and appearances. From that four research processes, researcher collected scane containing religious symbols used in the film Pengabdi Satan. The religious symbol used in this film is conversation that contains of terms: Prayer, Allah SWT, ustadz; Religious rituals: pray for the house so that the devil can not disturbe, perform prayers, and read prayers together; religious activities: funeral; appearance: wear caps, turban, and mukena.
