Abstract

This dissertation studies KH Hasyim Asy‟ari‟s standpoints, both cooperative and uncooperative ones, towards Dutch and Japanese imperialism from 1905 to 1947. The questions are: 1) Why was KH Hasyim Asy‟ari in cooperative and uncooperative states?, 2) How did he make his states noticeable?, and 3) What were the goals? This descriptive analysis literature study describes KH Hasyim Asy‟ari‟s struggle out of unfavourable policies on the people‟s religion and their nation. Then, the goals of his actionsexpressed in fatwas and decisions of NU Headquarters (PBNU) were analysed using Action Theory from T. Parsons and Social Identity theory from H. Tajfer with biographical and sociological approaches. In addition, a historical method from Louis Gottschalk was also used. The method constitutes four steps: heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that 1) KH Hasyim Asy‟ari‟s cooperative or uncooperative standpoint was due to the native‟s resistance against economy and religion policies implemented by the Dutch imperialist. Besides, being cooperative was, at a certain time, inevitable as the Dutch were at rule. While with the Japanese‟s politics which benefitted moslem in particular, he behaved cooperatively. Yet Saikeirewas one KH Hasyim opposed. 2) His position was firm when dealing with religion but was flexible with others. Under Dutch colonialism, he did the actions, wrote fatwas, and made decisions in NU Headquarters. While uncooperative state during Japanese ruler was expressed through fatwas, his involvementin the government and Japanese-formed institutions was the expression of cooperativeness. 3) The aims of being uncooperative against the Dutch were to protect religion, maintain culture identity, dignity, freedom, and unity. On the other hand, security, survival and struggle underlay the cooperativeness. All of these points were based on theology, nationalism, and religiousity of his with thorough sociology consideration. It can be infered that KH Hasyim Asy‟ari proved that religion theology is parallel to spirit of nationality and drives nationalism and patriotism to fight against colonization. That is why he viewed that religion, nation and its people could not be separated. A country is a place for religion to live and grow its rituals. Therefore, religion will never be honorable when the country where it lives is insulted and colonized.
