Abstract

The people of Temboro village, located in Karas Subdistrict Magetan Regency East Java, are known to be religious in various aspects. That is why the village is widely known as Kampung Madinah. The community adheres to the ideology of the Tablighi Jama‟at movement. Therefore, the community has their own views about the world, styles of life, and moral values that differ from other neighbouring communities in general. This also means that, in a cultural order, Kampung Madinah can be categorized as a sub-culture community. A community that has their own culture that differ from the larger society of which they are a part. Interestingly, despite being an “isolated” community, Kampung Madinah manages to have a significant potential for their economic development, even far more promising than any similar Indonesian rural areas in general. This research study investigate the following topics: (1) How is Kampung Madinah Temboro, as a community, organized? (2) How does Kampung Madinah Temboro, as a sub-culture community based on Tablighi Jama‟at movement, occur? (3) To what extent does Tablighi Jama‟at movement play its role in the economic development of the sub-culture community of Kampung Madinah Temboro? The research carried out in this community is important because there is a strong possibility that a sub-culture community based on Tablighi Jama‟at movement ideology like this might appear elsewhere. The research itself employs historical inquiries. The phenomenon studied here is an economic phenomenon. However, sociological and anthropological approaches were employed in this study to give the reader a broader view of the subject discussed. These are several findings obtained from the study. First, Kampung Madinah Temboro is composed of 8 systemic elements, which include: Kiai, pesantren, santri, a Tablighi Jama‟at Markas, members of Jamaʻah Tabligh movement, village mosques, village government, and the people of the village. These eight elements are integrated into a da‟wa mission of Jamaʻah Tabligh movement. Second, Kampung Madinah sub-culture community was formed through 4 phases: taʻāruf, taʻalluq, targīb, and tasykīl. As a sub-culture community, Kampung Madinah Temboro has details of certain cultural variables that make it alien to other communities in Indonesia in general. Third, that Tablighi Jama‟at ideology acts as a social capital that accommodates and encourages economic development within Kampung Madinah Temboro. The economy that develops in the community also has its own characteristics which contribute to their identity as a sub-culture community.
