Abstract

The construction reality of kualat is a phenomenon that is commonly found in Islamic boarding schools in Java, not to mention in Ali Maksum Islamic Boarding School. The construction reality is born from the three dialectical moments such as internalization, objectivation and externalization. This study aims to find out how kualat is constructed among santri. This research shows that the internalization process of kualat in pesantren occurs through secondary socialization by mentors, senior friends and their classmates. Internalization of kualat has occurred first through the primary socialization obtained from parents and the society. The objectivation of kualat in Ali Maksum Islamic Boarding School is accepted in the form of objective reality guided by the books of manners as well as folk stories about kualat in pesatren. From both processes, an externalization of kualat is found as the final process in the construction of kualat reality which was reflected in the use of kualat term explicitly or implicitly to build moral discipline. Armed with Berger & Luckmann's theory about Social Construction of Reality, the researcher aimed to do a descriptive qualitative study with a number of santri living in the Ali Maksum Islamic Boarding School as the subject of research.
