Abstract

The population of Indonesia has increased every year. At present Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world with a total population of 264 million and in 2050 it is predicted that Indonesia's population will reach 332 million. This high population growth leads to an increase in energy needs for the survival of human life, which raises environmental problems. It is realized that environmental problems occur due to human actions themselves so that environmental improvements are carried out by fostering human awareness of the importance of the environment and the urgency and challenges that must be faced by mankind if they do not move quickly. One of the efforts made to accelerate the process of changing attitudes and human behavior in looking at the environment is by applying the science of communication in it. In order to describe and analyze the strategy of changing people's behavior conducted by KUJ using the communication theory of development and sustainability communication which will be compared to the view of deep ecology to strengthen the validity of the study. The results of the study show that so far KUJ has applied the theory of development communication and sustainability communication in an effort to change people's views on the environment. In addition, this research also shows that the behavior change process carried out by KUJ between community members and the wider community is different. The process of behavior change that occurs in KUJ members is by: (1) information, (2) dissemination of information, (3) responsibility, (4) actions, and (5) habits. While the process of behavior change in society, namely; (1) information, (2) concerned, (3) desires, (4) actions, and (5) habits.
