Abstract

Being a minority in a multicultural society is challenging. It takes deliberate steps, a good attitude, and harmony with the community life to create a comfortable and peaceful life. Turkish immigrants living in the city of Rotterdam (the Netherlands) have lived as a minority for more than 40 years, meaning that two generations have now settled and bred in the Dutch windmill country. During this time, it appears that the interactions between Turkish immigrants and the multicultural society of Rotterdam have not been fully maximized in terms of communication. To build good relations between Turkish immigrants and multicultural societies in Rotterdam, mindful communication styles are needed. This study aims at observing and analysing mindful communication carried out by Turkish immigrants in Rotterdam, using comparative-qualitative research methods. Data were collected by interviews, observation and documentation. The informants in this study were old Turkish immigrants (40-60 years old) and young immigrants (20- 39 years old) who lived and settled in Rotterdam. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The data were interpreted with the theory of intercultural communication and mindfulness which includes processes and efforts in mindful intercultural communication. The results of this study indicate that young Turkish immigrants are more capable of communicating and interacting in multicultural societies compared to older immigrant groups.
