Abstract

The background of this study began during the pre-observation where the fifth grade students in the learning process had difficulty understanding learning material combined with illustrations that raced in the accompanying textbooks in each school. Therefore, the researcher examines the aesthetic value of illustrative book thematic companion grade V level MI / SD. The problems examined in this study are (1) What is the shape and structure of the thematic companion grade V illustration books published by Viva Pakarindo, Pustaka Persada, Putra Kertonatan, and Putra Nugraha? (2) What is the weight and content of the thematic companion grade V illustrations published by Viva Pakarindo, Pustaka Persada, Putra Kertonatan, and Putra Nugraha? (3) What is the appearance or presentation of the thematic class V accompanying book illustrations published by Viva Pakarindo, Pustaka Persada, Putra Kertonatan, and Putra Nugraha? This research is a library research or library research. The data collection techniques of this study include observation, interviews, and documentation. The observation technique was carried out by researchers at four schools, including SDIT Salsabila Baiturrahman, MI Islamiyah, SD N 3 Glodogan, and SD Aisyiyah Full Day. In addition, researchers conducted interviews with the homeroom teacher and one representative of class V students from each school. The documentation technique the researcher uses to retrieve data in the form of book illustrative photographs required in the discussion as well as photocopies of thematic companion books. The analysis in this study uses content analysis in which the researcher examines the illustrations in different V grade thematic books publishers based on the content adapted to the existing aesthetic elements. The results showed that (1) Class V thematic companion books published by Viva Pakarindo, Pustaka Persada, Putra Kertonatan, and Putra Nugraha have the same illustrated form elements namely points, lines, fields and spaces. (2) Every illustration in the V class thematic companion book published by Viva Pakarindo, Pustaka Persada, Putra Kertonatan, and Putra Nugraha has its own atmosphere, ideas and messages that can help students in understanding a material. However, it is blocked by a colorless illustration so that the reader of the illustration has difficulty in determining the atmosphere, ideas and messages contained therein. (3) Appearance or presentation of a good illustration consists of unity, complexity, and sincerity. The unity of illustrations in the books published by Viva Pakarindo, Pustaka Persada, Putra Kertonatan, and Putra Nugraha already looks good, because the shape elements of points, lines, fields, and space are able to arrange well even though the color elements have not been used. The complexity of the illustrations in the books of the four publishers has already been applied, but there are still very simple illustrations. The seriousness of the illustrations xii have been used in the books of the four publishers, but there are still illustrations that are not in harmony with the material so that the seriousness used is not good.
