Abstract

The background of this research stems from researchers' interest in the Mugi Waras BKL Reading Park which was declared as the first Center of Excellence in DIY by the central BKKBN to become a referral BKL with a variety of mentoring programs for the elderly, with positive activities that managers continue to develop for the advancement and comfort of the elderly. This study aims to determine the role of the Mugi Waras Elderly Family Guidance Park (BKL) in an effort to improve the quality of life of the elderly in Blendung Hamlet, Sumbersari Village, Moyudan District, Sleman Regency, and to identify the obstacles faced by the reading park. The type of research used is qualitative. The collection of data are using observation, interviews and documentation. The results showed (1) the role of the Mugi Waras BKL Public Reading Garden in an effort to improve the quality of life of the elderly, including: (a) the role of TBM as a place of learning for the elderly by exchanging information, then practicing what they have received from reading books they read such as livestock farming and vegetables (b) as a place to provide books as a source of information. The information is a source of knowledge for the elderly including the media seeking insights about health such as various medications and other health knowledge as well as a therapeutic medium so as not to become senile and as a means of entertainment. In addition, the role of the Mugi Waras BKL Public Reading Garden as a provider of information is also a source of free or unpaid (c) the role of TBM as an increase in the productive economy includes; book practices become works, garden practices, livestock farming practices. (2) Constraints faced by the Mugi Waras BKL Reading Center are (a) Lack of human resources to manage community reading parks, (b) Collection of reading books whose numbers are still limited, then there are solutions, namely (1) Addition of HR to running programs and services at the Mugi Waras BKL reading centre, by conducting TBM management training that is intended for mothers or teenagers to be the successors of the BKL Mugi Waras Reading Park (2) Collection of book collections by coordinating with BKKBN, University of Mercu Buana Yogyakarta.
