Abstract

Afdeling Teluk Betung is an area located on the southern tip of the island of Sumatra. Its position makes this region important in relations between the islands of Java and Sumatra. When 'Politik Etis" policies were implemented in 1901 they included immigration, education and irrigation. This politic has changed the face of Lampung a lot, one of which became the first immigration area of 1905 until 1932 which indirectly opened areas that had not been touched before. The relation of 'Politik Etis' to religious movements is in its position as a factor in influencing the development of da'wah and mission with the birth of various policies that benefit for mission and harm for da'wah. This study uses historical methods, namely topic selection, heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. Sources were obtained using official documents published by Muhammadiyah, the Dutch colonial government, and missionaries. In addition it is supplemented with secondary sources obtained from books and journal articles. The author uses a political and sociological approach assisted by social change theory. Presentation of data in the form of descriptive analysis chronologically. The results of this study indicate that 'Politik Etis' policies encroach on the Afdeling Teluk Betung cause the complexity of the composition of the community. Simultaneously, the irrigation, education and immigration program succeeded in opening new avenues in the meeting of various social and religious groups of the migrant and natives of Lampung. The development of Islamic da'wah and the Catholic mission of 1932-1938 was influenced by efforts to bring education, religion and health. The progress of mission and mission is influenced by various actors. The main actor in the Catholic mission is Albertus Hermelink, while the Islamic da'wah is carried out by traditionalists (Kh. Gholib) and modernists (Muhammadiyah). Concurrent development of da'wah and mission can be seen from the response of Islamic da'wah over the support of the Dutch East Indies government for the Catholic mission. While the Catholic mission assisted by the government expanded its expansion in response to the expansion of Islamic influence in the various colonies inhabited by transmigrants. Furthermore, this can be viewed from the presence and changes in various systems and social structures of society penetrated by propaganda and mission through education, and aspects of social life.
