Abstract
N-methyl glukamide surfactant has been synthesized from waste cooking oil and N-methyl glukamine. Were synthesized via indirect amidation of methyl ester used frying oil. Products was carried out by FT-IR and Furthermore, N-methyl glukamide as synthetic product was characterized as surfactant. Transesterification of used frying oil with base catalyst (NaOH) produced mixture of methyl ester, Le methyl ester in 94,42%. From mixture of methyl ester, i.e methyl ester of palmitate, oleate, isostearate, and trans-9-octadecinoic acid withpercent conversion 33,28%. Amidation of methyl esters with N-methyl glukamine (2:3) for 3 h produced the related N-methyl glukamide in 90.49%. Characterization as surfactant showed that the N-methyl glukamide could reduced the surface tension of water from 65,2 mN/m to16,27 mN/m. Foam was stable until 1.5 hours of observed time, petrol-water- palm oil and surfactant system has 100 % emulsion index, stability emulsions have observed until 4 days. Further more, HLB value of surfactant is 8,045 with characteristic dispersion in the water and can be applied as metting agent. Key words: Surfactant, N-methyl glukamide, HLB value (Hydrophyle Lypophyle Balance)
