Abstract

This article aims at describing and analyzing the mysticism thought of Ahmad Rifai, a scholar in the middle of the 19th century, who was able to spread Islam by purification and reformation of Islamic teaching in Middle Java, particularly Pekalongan, Kedu and their surroundings. His teachings can be found out in his works consisting of about 53 books three principal subjects: Islamic theology, jurisprudence and mysticism. The books were so simply and poetically written in Javanese using Arabic letters called Pegon that they could be understood at ease by the society at the moment. In composing poems, he applied the pattern of old Indonesian poetry quoted from those of Arabic and Persian, called naz}z}am. They were at last adapted with Javanese poetry. His thoughts of Islamic mysticism were consisted of the essence of Islamic mysticism, stations, conditions, eight praiseworthy attributes, eight blameworthy attributes, love for God, getting close to Him, and to know Him.
