Abstract

This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of adversity training to enhance psychological capital among adolescents who experienced school dropout in Yogyakarta. PsyCap is an individual’s positive psychological state of development and characterized by: (1) having confidence (self-efficacy) to take on and put in the necessary effort to succeed at challenging tasks; (2) making a positive attribution (optimism) about succeeding now and in the future; (3) persevering toward goals and, when necessary, redirecting paths to goals (hope) in order to succeed; and (4) when beset by problems and adversity, sustaining and bouncing back and even beyond (resiliency) to attain success. This was a quasi experimental study with one group pre-post test design. Sample of this research was 20 adolescents who experienced school dropout, age 15-19 years old, with low psychological capital score and live in Yogyakarta. The subjects was given Adversity Quotient Training to improve the ability to face the problems in everyday life and fight against them. The training is prepared based on adversity quotient theory and consists of four sessions, they are listen, explore, analyze, and do (LEAD). Impact of the adversity training was measured with enhancement in psychological capital questionnaire score. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to analyze the difference between pre and posttest data. Result of the research showed that adversity training was not effective in enhancing psychological capital in adolescents who experienced school dropout (p = 0, 147; p > 0.05). Therefore, the hypothesis of this research is declined. Keywords: adversity training, adolescent, school dropout, psychological capital.
