Abstract
The objective of this research mas to explore the appreciation of rural societies about new information, the type of information they need, the criteria of information technology applicable and the design of the technology to display information for rural societies. The research was conducted in February 2006 by distributing a series of questionaire to respondents in a number of rural areas in West Java and Yogyakarta. The results show that respondents express their need for information. They also prefer interesting and interactive displays with entertaining pictures and sounds. They commonly use TV receivers in their homes. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the information technology system which can fulfill the demand of rural societies should incorporate specially designed TV sets to include an additional set top box unit.
