Abstract

The progess and development of science and technology enable us to consume variety of foods. Consequently, care should be taken by moslems, as foods they consume might contain unlawful (haram) ingredients, particularly those produced by non moslem countries. Such unlawful ingredients are briefly illustrated. Gelatin is widely used in the production of ice cream, confectionaries, and cocoa products. Gelatine is a proteine obtained from animal collagen (cow, pig, sheep) by a certain chemical process. Without particular request pig is usually employed. In addition, care should also be taken upon animal products which were not sloughtered in accordance with Islamic law. Apart from beverages alcohol is quite common in medical and cosmetical preparation. It is suggested, therefore, every moslem notices the component of ingredients in food products as well as medical and cosmetical preparation. The role and significance of biotechology is also shortly illustrated, particulary in connection with medication, production of medicines, and criminal.
