Abstract

The Modernization of the Islamic education system in Indonesia is actually an attempt to adopt the education system developed by the Dutch colonial government. This attempt was first made by the Muslim modernists at the beginning of the twentieth century. As a result, at least two types of Islamic education systems have emerged since that time. The first is the secular school which completely adopts the Dutch style of education. Islamic teachings and values, however, are introduced to the students of this school. The second is the modern Islamic school (Madrasah) which, to some extent, adopts some substance and method of learning initiated by the Dutch. Islamic boarding schools, although they previously refused to accept the model of education developed by the Dutch, eventually followed the trend of modernization. In fact, from the beginning of the twentieth century up to the post independence period many Islamic boarding schools in Java as well as in other parts of the country adopted new styles of education and tried to adjust their curriculum to the current needs of the society. This resulted from either attempts to preserve the existence of the Islamic boarding schools themselves or to equip the students with the necessary skills to cope with the modern world. Through developing its education system, the Islamic boarding school (Pondok Pesantren) Nurul Hakim in Nusa Tenggara Barat (West Timor) has been successful in preparing its students to live a better life in their society. Indeed such an accomplishment is a quite a challenge to the previous image and assumption that the Islamic boarding school is only a traditional type of education which leads its students to the middle of nowhere.
