Abstract

Wound may be defined as a loss of cellular continuity of living tissue. Wound healing is a process of restoring damaged or dead tissues by new tissues. The process consists of three overlapping phases, i.e. phase of inflammation, proliferation and maturation (remodeling). Sunflower seeds contain ß-sitoserol, flavonoid and linoleic acid that can stimulate the process of wound healing. This research is carried out to study the influence of sunflower oil (Helianthus annus, L.) on wound healing process. On the 12 male white rats (Rattus novergicus, L.) Strain Spraque Dawley, age 3 months, wound excision using punch biopsy were made on the back skin, 0.5 cm on the right and left side of columna vertebralis and 2.5 cm from ears. One wound excision on the left back without treatment become control group, meanwhile one wound excision on the right back was layered by drops of sunflower oil. The wounded tissues taken on the day 3, 7 and 12 were made into histological slides. The inflammation on wound healing was examined by counting the number of polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocytes, proliferation phase was observed by fibroblast and maturation phase was assessed by the density of collagen fibers. The data of the number of PMN leukocytes and fibroblast were analyzed using two-way ANOVA followed by LSD Test. Data of collagen fiber density was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis statistic and then Mann Whitney U Test. The results suggest that topical application of sunflower oil is able to hasten the inflammation phase, the proliferation and maturation phase so that wound healing will be faster.
