Abstract

In the West, spirituality and religion has been ignored in almost all levels of life, including social work practices. The philosophy of state-religion separation that bases the secular West has led community development workers avoid the usage of religious aspects in their works. However, some social work experts start to believe that understanding of religious aspects is essential for effective practices of social work, including community development. This brief paper tries to describe the importance of religious elements in the works of community development. It insists that Islamic community development programs have to take religious values into consideration in their practices. Referring to two researches on faith-based community development projects by Christopher Candland and Gloria B. Frederivk respectively, this paper states that values and norms derived from religions play a significant role in formatting social capital. They can be social capital instead. This paper also provides the readers with some basic values in Islamic teaching which are potential to play pivotal role in social capital formation among Muslims. They can contribute for effectiveness of Islamic community development projects done by Islamic Foundations in Indonesia.
