Abstract

Fazlur Rahman (igi9-i988) is one of the most predominantly modernist muslim thinkers around the muslim world. His ideas about modern Islam have cotne to the reference for the many muslim scholars later. Among of his ideas is his fomentation to reform the methodology of Qur'anic interpretation. He criticized the atomistic way in Qur'anic interpretation as has been done by interpreters (mufassiru"n) and Islamic jurists tfuqaka*). He emphasized the importance of wholistic interpretation of the Qur'an based on social and historical setting to obtain its principles of moral and law, and then, applied to present situation. In respect with method of Qur'anic interpretation, he offered the form of understanding through the double movement theory. In this article the author will study such a theory in various aspects, such as its definition (including of its appliying steps), origin, examples, and its weakness. Views of some scholars are also figured here to make the explanation of the theory clearer. From this study the author conludes that eventhough theoritically this theory is better than others and promises the fresh Qura'anic interpretation in each period, but practically the theory is more difficult to apply than the traditional method of Qur'anic interpretation in the tretise of u$uZ al-fiqh.
