Abstract

Education is a vehicle for human beings to increase their critical capacities and to make their life is better than before. Education, ideally, becomes a productive force, i.e., a medium for social transformation and social class mobilization. In the sense that, through education, students from middle-lower class family are possible to transcend their social class position when they are adult. However, this kind of idealistic view is not compatible with what happening in reality. Education, in the era of globalization, tends to be divided into two sharp positions: elite education for elite people and ordinary education for ordinary people. The statements of "education for all" and "all children have right for qualified education" are easy to formulate but difficult to make them come into existence. The author argues that globalization makes poor people are more difficult to have access to qualified education. If we perpetuate this situation means that we agree that education is only for social class reproduction, not for social class transformation.
