Abstract

Every person wants their life to be meaningfull, so they can be usefull to theirself and people around them and bring happiness. So are the ‘jathilan’ artists who still keep and continue this culture, they want to be meaningfull for their life. The aim of this study is to know the jathilan artists’ meaning of life. The informants are two members of Satrio Mudho Budhoyo Jathilan Community, minimal ten years experience in ‘jathilan’ art, and have been performed in the stage several times. The theory of meaning of life from Bastaman has been used to guide the process of identification for the sources and aspects of meaning of life. This is qualitative study with phenomenology method. Data gathered by observations, interviews, documentations and Focus Group Discussion. Steps of analysis technique are epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthesis. Result of this research showed that ‘jathilan’ artists found the source of the meaning of life from three domains. They are personal domain (developing four values—creativity, experience, feeling, and hope; acting positive in personal context, and self comprehension), social and interpersonal domain (acting positive in interpersonal context and acquainting relationship), and trancendent domain in spiritualism. The meaning from those sources internalized in the ‘jathilan’ artists self, and bring the the freedom of will, the will to meaning, and the meaning of life, and in the end they feel the happiness as the ultimate meaning of life that be realized in the happines of being ‘jathilan’ artists.
