Abstract

This research analyzes a literary work of fiction, which the fiction is also presented in a media, then the both versions are taken as objects in this research. The objects are The Legend of Sleepy Hollow short story by Washington Irving and Sleepy Hollow movie-script by Andrew Kevin Walker. In this case, the short story is adapted into movie version. In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow short story and Sleepy Hollow movie are found a unique differentiation, it placed on the different characterization of Ichabod Crane. The main character of Ichabod Crane in the short story is a coward person, while the main character of Ichabod Crane in the movie is a brave person. This research is analyzed to answer the problems; (1) the influences of intrinsic elements on the differences of Ichabod Crane characterization, and (2) the influences of extrinsic elements on the differences of Ichabod Crane characterization. Here, the writer uses the application of “A Theory of Adaptation” by Linda Hutcheon. An adaptation process results different versions between the original version and the adapted version. For the method of research, this paper uses qualitative research method. The result, Ichabod Crane’s characterization in the short story and the movie are different, because these are influenced by intrinsic aspects and extrinsic aspects, which are described as; (1) the influences from the intrinsic aspects are social settings, cultural settings, and psychological conditions, and (2) the influences from the extrinsic aspects are the different background in composing the story, and the author role in determining the Ichabod Crane’s characterization.
