Abstract

Abstract The sufficiency of foods constitutes one of the parameters of human wellbeing. The fact is, the foods availability cannot catch the fast growth of population. For Indonesia, the foods scarcity is a kind of paradox of the agrarian country blessed with abundance of natural resources. The policies on food have yet taken side to the systems of production and distribution met fully by the domestic yealts. The efforts to realize food security tend to be meant as the sufficient availability of foods, thus importing foods become the solution when scarcity is hitting. Whereas, with such abundance of both human and natural resources Indonesia should be able to meet its needs of food, more than that, if the farming sector is handled seriously it will result in competitive commodities at international, so as the farming can be as the main basic livelihoods of the Indonesian farmers. The main key is the food sovereignty, prioritizing the domestic foods production, supported with policies siding to the Indonesian farmers as the main producers to meed foods and other commodities. Local experiences from villages of Eastern Indonesia show that the communities can meet their need of foods, and put the farming as their livelihoods. Even in an areas, formerly hit by food vulnerability, the villagers supported by the local government can develop creativity to rearrange the system of crops production, so that it can obtain the surplus of foods production. It is due to the enggagement of the elements of community and local government, thus, there appears local movements that can make a meaningful change to the improvement of community welfare. This local based experience become a lesson learned, that the village can become the basis of food security and livelihood for the villagers, hence it can strengthen village impacting to the wellbeing improvement of Indonesian people which are mostly living in villages.
