Abstract
In order to serve people sensitively and effectively, human service workers have to practice the indigenous approaches which are culturally bound as well as self-reflective in nature. It is interesting since Indonesian practitioners who grew up in Indonesian context, unfortunately still need to ‘learn’ to be indigenous professionals. It is surely uneasy as our knowledge is dominated by Western discourses. This study aims at exploring how human service professionals at Rifka Annisa, one of the largest NGOs in Yogyakarta, strive to approach their clients in culturally sensitive manners in direct intervention practices. The focuses of this study are two folds: (1) How their social and cultural background have shaped their framework of intervention; (2) How they implement their cultural values in more practical sense. In the context of direct interventions, it is important to investigate on how they practice indigenous strategies which are represented in the stages of engagement, intervention, and termination with their clients. The methodology of the research is a qualitative study. It will interview the workers, based on the utilization of purposive sampling, as the primary sources of investigation. The documentation study toward the organization‘s written documents is also needed as its secondary data.
