Abstract

Kinahrejo is a nearest village to Merapi Volcano where people live in. So it had more victims of Merapi’s eruptions than other villages. One of victims was the well-knowned Mbah Marijan who was recognized as a guard of Merapi. It is interesting since eventhough the people surrounding is a first potential group of victims of the Volcano, yet they reject to be re-located to other place. Women as the most vulnerable population related to this kind of disaster, also decide to survive there. According to ethnoscience approach as well as ‘outsider’ point of view, the reason behind their decision is the volcano has given a lot of advantages, it has supported their life so far. They believe that the volcano has no disaster at all as it is a source of life, than miseries and suffering. This belief is also embraced by women as they possess adequate self-resiliency which make them survive over generations.
