Abstract

This study, entitled “The Conflict between Communism and Islam in Novel of ‘Azra’ Jakarta by Najib Elkilany: A Structuralism-Genetic Analysis”, is based on an assumption about the conflict between Communism and Islam in Indonesia which was socio-historically homologous in 1960’s. this historical account has gained less concern both in Indonesian history and no proportion in Indonesia literature. It is Najib Elkilany, an Egyptian author, who is interested in writing this matter through his novel “Azra’ Jakarta”. This research aims at investigating the generic factors, either internal or external, that encouraged him to write the novel. To reach the goal, the study applies a Structuralism-Genetic approach and a dialectical method to analyze four categories of Goldmann’s model. First, the novel Azra’ Jakarta should be treated as a human work discussing the fact of literature and that of socio-history in Indonesia, so that the homology between both facts can be comprehensively accomplished. This step guides the researcher to elaborate the social setting of the author inspiring the novel. In fact, his novel is influenced by his trans-individuality and his social involvement. Crystallization of human factual structure and social class of the author can be seen from his worldview resulted from his interaction within trans-individuality and surroundings. This research, based on Goldmann’s Structuralism-Genetic approach against anomalous authors, provides new paradigm to support the approach. The study shows that the fact of humanity lying in literature is the infiltration of Atheist Ideology into Indonesian society and coup d'etat where Moslems mostly became the victims of the Communist Movement. This literary fact was clearly homologous and symmetrical with the Indonesians’ social history in 1960’s when Indonesian Moslems encountered discrimination, abduction, imprisoning, and murder. In fact, those brutalities occurred in all over Indonesia, particularly in Gorang Gareng, Kanigoro, Jember and Yogyakarta. These sufferings challenged Najib Elkilany to discribe them in his novel: ‘Azra’ Jakarta. His faith as a Moslem and his trans-individuality which influenced his way of thinking obviously motivated him to write this novel.as a propagator involved in politics and a member of Moslem intellectuals, he absolutely refuses communism in Moslem countries. He fully realizes that even though Muslims countries are geographically separated, Islam is one as it is a religion, homeland and nation where all Moslems are obliged to defend it regardless of geographical difference. Keywords: Najib Elkilany, Azra’ Jakarta, Islamic literatures, humanity, social class, trans-individuality.
