Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of information needs on student information seeking behavior in the library of Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University (UST) Yogyakarta. This research uses quantitative descriptive method with simple linear regression analysis. The population of this study are UST students who are active in the academic year 2016/2017 and samples taken as many as 369 students. Methods of data collection by distributing questionnaires, documentation, observation, and interviews. The results showed that: (1) The mean value of the needs of student information in the Library Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa (UST) Yogyakarta is 3,04 so it is categorized good. Indicators of this information need include cognitive needs, affective needs, personal integration needs, social integration needs and fantasy needs. The indicator of information needs that has the highest average value is the need to fantasize with an average value of 3.15. Indicator of information needs that have the lowest value is the need of personal integration with an average value of 2.70. (2) The mean value of student information seeking behavior in the Library of Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa (UST) Yogyakarta is 3.05 so it is categorized good. This information seeking behavior indicator according to David Ellis is starting, chaining, browsing, differentiating, monitoring, extracting, verifying and ending. (3) Information need give contribution to student information seeking behavior equal to 60,4% meaning there is influence of information needs to information seeking behavior and 39,6% information seeking behavior influenced by factors outside of information needs. Researcher suggestions based on the results of this study are, (1) UST Library should improve the provision of information, especially to meet the needs of student information in the needs of personal integration that still has a low value in the indicator of information needs. (2) The UST Library should be able to increase the availability of collections to facilitate the search for student information in obtaining more relevant information. (3) The UST Library should be able to improve the utilization of library facilities by means of user education, or the introduction of information retrieval strategies that facilitate such readers as information retrieval through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog).
