Abstract

Social interaction is very important in human life, especially in the multicultural social sphere like the city of Yogyakarta. Prejudice is considered to be one of the inhibiting factors in the interaction process. This research was conducted to determine the correlations between prejudice and social interaction in Javanese Jogja students towards Papuan students. The subjects used are students who are members of the IMAYO organization (Yogyakarta Student Association) UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta totaling 47 people using purposive sampling. The research method used is quantitative with the scale of prejudice and the scale of social interaction. Data analysis using correlation techniques from Pearson's Product moment with SPSS 16.0 for Windows program. The results of this research indicate a significant negative correlations between prejudice and social interaction in Javanese Jogja students towards Papuan students. This is indicated by the correlation coefficient (rxy) = -0.670 and P = 0.000 with an effective contribution of 0.449 or equivalent to 44.9%. The test results show the hypothesis is accepted. The higher the prejudice, the lower the social interaction and vice versa, the lower the prejudice, the higher the possibility of social interaction.
