Abstract

Nowadays libraries are faced with a fundamental role as an information provider institution, this fundamental role makes libraries always update continuously, solely so that library collections can be spread and used effectively by users. The fundamental problems bring librarians as the key to the success of the library, which means that the success of the library depends on the professionalism of the librarian. Thus, the librarian's professionalism cannot be measured mathematically, but needs an in-depth approach, so that the librarian's subjective reality emerges. Therefore, with this in-depth study, it will be able to reveal the elements of librarian self-concept formation, librarian information needs patterns, and librarian perceptions of the meaning arising from communication with users. The purpose of this study is to capture the meaning in the reality of librarians, therefore, qualitative methods are very suitable for use in this study. Not apart from that, this study also uses a phenomenological approach with the concept of verstehen. Data collection in this study was based on data on interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of this study are components of self-concept, pattern of information needs, and construction of meaning among librarians. This self-concept is divided into five components, such as: body image, ideal self, self-esteem, role, and self-identity in librarians. In addition, there are other elements that influence the librarian's self-concept, such as: age, gender, mass meida, personal relationships, personality, and culture. Information needs are divided into eight components, such as: strarting, chaining, browsing, differentiating, monitoring, extracting, verifying, and ending. Construction of meaning, such as: understanding the intentions of others and validating the truth of information.
