Abstract

Contextualizing an interpretation of the Holy Quran, the book written by Hamka,Tafsir al-Azhar, is criticizing communism. This study is not meant to plea Hamka’s thoughts. It is a critical study of Tafsir al-Azhar, a book employing communism issues as its interpretation materials. Using the issues, Hamka had interpretation model different from that of Nusantara Ulamas’ that maintained normativetheological model. Reflecting the social culture through conflict between communists and Muslims as social classes existing in the society, Hamka criticized communism. The author wanted to trace the origin of his interpretation by looking through reality of the conflict, Hamka’s view towards the world and his society. To assist the genetic-interpretation trace, the interpretation is examined using genetic structuralism theory. From the theory it was discovered that the internal structures constructing the interpretation werecommunism theme as ideology and social-political movement, communists characters, and social structure. Social structure reflected in the interpretation was that he put communist and muslim as two social classes facing each other in high alert. The externals, on the other hand, were his life and the high communist-muslim conflict when writing it. The reality was actually a bigger social structure. Hamka’s main view, being the most important problem in his criticism about communism, was that communism with its materialism teaching was an atheistic ideology. How it was spread world wide and how conflict with muslims began were described. In addition, social crime commited by communist leaders and their failure in coummunist countries in setting welfare were also reflected. The pictures above constitute quran’s verses interpretation contextualisation.The writer noticed that Hamka’s interpretation is very subjective as it was generated from social fact reflection he read by involving ideology and social interests. In fact, Hamka was always involved in any conflict with the communist. It urged him to utilize interpretation to counterattack by reflecting communist crime and its fight against muslims.
