Abstract

This study aims to (1) describe and explain the implementation of the patterns of learning community with character; (2) find the development of the patterns of learning community with character through lesson study in order to realize learning reform; and (3) find the impact of the application of the development of the patterns of learning community with character by the realization of learning reform in the Islamic middle schools (Madrasa Tsanawiyah/MTs) of Bantul Regency. This qualitative and quantitative research uses the Research & Development model consisting of stages, i.e., exploration, pattern development, pattern testing, and dissemination. The research is carried out in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta and Semarang Religious Training Center. Data is collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. This research obtains three findings. First, the patterns of learning community with character in the MTs of Bantul Regency formed through collaborative learning, collegial relations of teachers, and the participation of parents, communities, and the Ministry of Religion Office in Bantul Regency has not been fully formed. Second, the development of the patterns of learning community with character to realize learning reform in the MTs of Bantul Regency is carried out through lesson study based on Classroom Action Research (CAR). Third, the impacts of the application of the development pattern of learning communitywith character to the realization of learning reform in the MTs of Bantul Regency are (a) collaborative character learning is improved indicated by the relationship of mutual learning in more interactive learning through actions and or activating and fun media. Character development of students can be further enhanced through collaborative designed learning activities and followed by discipline by the model teacher; (b) teacher collegial relations are more increased compared to the implementation of the lesson study before development. The activity of discussing teaching practices, observing each other, creating shared ideas, and encouraging each other has increased due to the existence of CAR-based lesson study forums that are directly useful in relation to professional development and ease of implementation. The suggestions put forward are that (1) CAR-based lesson study patterns is expected to be implemented in the MTs of Bantul Regency; (2) dissemination and facilitation of the implementation of lesson study is based on CAR by the Office of the Ministry of
