Abstract

The Batak tribe divides their social class based on patrilineal. This cultural system does not only divide social class based on class, but also based on gender. Batak men are the main center, while women are the second class. Likewise, the division of labor between men and women is also different. Because of this stigma, then the view that power and role are male domains is manifested in masculine identities. As a result, there is growing resistance to shifting gender roles. This study focuses on examining the reasoning used by Batak men to maintain their male identity and why this reasoning is used. This study uses a socio-anthropological approach to analyze the practices and constructions of masculinities that are built, maintained and reproduced by the Padang Lawas community in the current context, at a time when modernity and gender equality are a necessity. Sources of data were found through field observations, documentation, and interviews by determining the informants based on purposive sampling technique. This research is descriptive-analysis with qualitative methods. Based on the results of the study, it was found that Batak men used preventive cultural masculinity in order to maintain their self-esteem (ego) and image as men, carry out their self-identity as part of Batak patriarchy, and so as not to be deprived of religious and cultural understanding. The reason for involving preventive cultural reasoning is an implication when Batak men resist the changing aspects of patriarchal culture that affect the context of their masculinity, to be precise the idea of gender equality brought about by modernity. These men tried not to be uprooted from the roots of the Batak patriarchal culture. They also wear a patriarchal cultural perspective in viewing Islam. So if modernity echoes the concept of gender equality, it will automatically encourage Batak men to strengthen and protect their masculinity in their own ways and standards.
