Abstract

This research focuses to: 1) analyze students' mental models in explaining the concepts on work-energy and momentum material 2) determine the consistency of students in using their mental models. This is a descriptive research. This study involved 221 students senior high school in Pangandaran District who had studied the work-energy and momentum material. The sample was selected using stratified random sampling technique. The research instrument uses the Energy Momentum Concept Survey (EMCS) which is a standardized test of adaptation from Singh & Rosengrant (2003). The Instrument EMCS was translated into Indonesian and validated by three experts. Student responses on the test were analyzed using the model analysis method. With this method, students' alternative knowledge and the probability of students using that knowledge in an equivalent range of contexts can be assessed quantitatively. The deeper interviews were conducted with nine students to explore mental models on each concept. The results of the plot model show that most students still have a wrong understanding of the concept of work-energy and momentum. There are two mental models used by students, namely model 2 and mixed model. The eigenvalues (> 0.65) for each concept indicate that students are consistent in using their mental models.
