Abstract

The ability of scientific reasoning is one of the many qualities that it took in the 21st century to prepare students for succeed in facing the challenges of globalization. Scientific reasoning also strongly supports understanding concepts and students' performance on the content of physics. The purpose of this research to know scientific reasoning ability of student’s SMAN 1 Prembun to solve impulses and momentum problems. The research used descriptive method. This research involed 177 students of SMAN 1 Prembun who had studied the impulse and momentum material. In conducthing techniques this research used instrument Impulse and Momentum Scientific Reasoning Tests (IMSRT) which was compiled with refers to instrument Lawson Classroom Test Scientific Reasoning (LCTSR) by Lawson (2000) and Inventory for Scientific Thingking And Reasoning Assessment (iSTAR) by Jing Han (2013). The Instrument presents 6 indicators of scientific reasoning consist of 24 multiple-choice items, which divided into 12 major items and 12 reason items. The analysis of the data on this research is descriptive analysis used the pair scoring technique by modifying the Lawson’s scoring technique, which provides an overview of the patterns and levels of student’s scientific reasoning ability. The result provides information that students of SMAN 1 Prembun about impulse and momentum have concrete operational pattern 0f 58,19%, transisional operational pattern of 40,68%, and formal operational pattern of 1,13%. These data indicate that the students of SMAN 1 Prembun have not been able to reach the levels of formal operational pattern stages at precisely the time that should have been achieved since the age of 11. The level of student's scientific reasoning ability is in the low category with a average percentage of 34.42%, the highest level of scientific reasoning ability achieved by student is a proportional reasoning indicator and lowest achievement is a causal reasoning indicator
