Abstract

The research aims to reveal the Arabic learning experience, social-mental condition, and learning motivation of blind students in several state Islamic universities in Indonesia. Besides, it also aims to know the concepts of Arabic learning of blind students through a sociocultural perspective. The dissertation belongs to a case study with a phenomenological qualitative approach. Observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation were employed to find the meaning of the research subjects' experiences. Further, the descriptive analysis technique with Miles and Huberman's approach was used to interpret the phenomena in the fields. The population included all blind students in state Islamic universities in Indonesia, especially 16 blind students of State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, State Islamic University Surakarta, and State Islamic University Salatiga. The research found that blind students in state Islamic universities in Indonesia learned Arabic by applying constructivism and collaborative approaches. The students were characterized as holding special features in learning Arabic: Ultimate Second Language Attainment, curiosity, and good language behavior to connect with the surroundings. Moreover, the government has provided great opportunities for blind students by regulating an inclusive education, providing scholarships, and opening special quotas in civil servant vacancies. Blind students are part of society, actively participating in social activities in which they live. In general, they were highly motivated to learn, but many of them were bullied by other people since they were children. To conclude, it is recommended that Arabic learning for blind students through a sociocultural perspective emphasizes social interaction during the learning process.Pembelajaran bahasa Arab, mahasiswa difabel netra, perspektif sosiokultural.
